Deep Cuts: Hammill + Gary Lucas, Hamster Theater, Il Tempio delle Clessidre, Guapo, echolyn, Hawkwind

Hello everyone …

Specializing in rare cuts by classic and modern bands, Prog Rock Deep Cuts is a forward thinking radio show that promises to match the obscure with the new and fresh. Intelligent, emotional, and visceral classic to modern progressive rock broadcasted live every Thursday from 7-10 pm EST on www.progrock.com.

This week (February 6th), Deep Cuts is proud to present yet another varied playlist. To start with, we’ll be featuring tracks from the highly anticipated collaboration from Peter Hammill (Van der Graaf Generator) and Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart) entitled “Other Worlds”.

Though the playlist will ultimately be determined during the show, other music in consideration include tracks from Italian proggers Il Tempio delle Clessidre and their new record “AlieNatura” as well as classic tracks from Il Balletto di Bronzo’s “Ys”, a 1970’s rollercoaster ride of a concept album about Mount Vesuvius.

Additionally, cuts from Hamster Theater and their zany “Carnival Detournement”, led by accordionist Dave Willey, also of Thinking Plague. Also, tunes from the now-defunct obscure Pittsburgh-based progressive folk band Psoas (pronounced So-az) caught my ear as potential Deep Cuts material, a mysterious and subtle group marked by haunting acoustic guitar and female lead vocals.

To top it off, tracks from echolyn, Guapo, Djam Karet, and The Fierce and the Dead are in consideration. Lastly, classic music from Henry Cow, Hawkwind, Magma, and Egg will be sprinkled into the playlist, making for an epic and engaging voyage into prog’s less-charted waters.

Join us this Thursday on www.progrock.com and chat with us in the chat room for what is promising to be an exciting 3 hour trip through modern and classic progressive music!

Jethro Tull’s “Fire at Midnight” International Collaboration

In November 2012, I received a friend request on Facebook from a guitarist named Claudio Delgift. After I accepted it, we began to chat and discovered we had a mutual love of progressive rock and Claudio sent me some links to a few international collaborations he’d orchestrated over the last few years via the internet. Soon, it came up that I was a flute player, inspired by Ian Anderson of the band Jethro Tull to pick up flute and an interest in music.

It wasn’t long after that, that we decided to cover a tune together. We bounced a few ideas back and forth via Youtube videos and finally decided on “Fire at Midnight”, the closing track on Tull’s “Songs from the Wood” LP released in 1977, as it is the first Tull song I ever learned to play.

Over the course of the following year, I received demos of the song in various states of completion and honed my part to be authentic as possible. In December of 2013, I finally tracked my part and Amber Wolfe was kind enough to offer her fireplace as a backdrop.

And so, here it is, January, 2014 and it’s finally here. I couldn’t possibly be prouder of the results. To give you an idea just how international this project really is, here is a list of the collaborators.

Dave Becher: drums (New York, USA)
Ron Hall: bass (Denver Colorado, USA)
Cees Van Ooijen: keys, mixing, and video editing (Holland)
Tim Wardle : vocals (Boca Ratón Florida, USA)
Claudio Delgift: guitars (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Ian Beabout: Flute (West Virginia, USA)
